Infinite Cold Distance

Infinite Cold Distance is the latest EP from Detroit-based techno artist Joe Sousa. A veteran of such imprints as: Blank Code [Detroit], Clan Destine Records [Glasgow], and Junted [Detroit], Joe makes his much awaited debut on Detroit Underground with this genre-defying release.

Infinite Cold Distance is cerebral, profound, and provoking. Foremost among the thoughts that will inevitably assault the listener after the first sonic journey through this release is the seeming inappropriateness of the label “EP”. The conceptual cohesion of the work is stunning, and it towers over many longer format releases by virtue of its lucid movement between and across individual tracks. But subsequent listens reveal a truth that is already hinted at in the title: totality is infinite, distance is relative, and coldness contains multitudes. The cohesion of the release seems to result from tracing the trajectory of a feeling, rather than an idea.

Perhaps the greatest achievement of Infinite Cold Distance is that it sets a new standard for every genre that takes “darkness” as a constitutive theme, by teaching the synesthetic imagination that there are many shades of black. Instead of using nihilism as a veil for detached indifference, it takes up the optics of a dismal cinematics and surveys the post-despair landscape of modernity with cold honesty. The sonic architecture that results from this exploration creates a rich texture of black room rhythms which are simultaneously deeply unsettling and yet, eerily soothing. Taken as a whole, Infinite Cold Distance demonstrates a mastery of contradiction: the frantic pace of the opening tracks give way to an interlude [Petals In the Stream] which is both contemplative and restless. [Purity] unleashes all the destructive forces that haunt technological progress in a thundering array of sirens, drones and lasers. The final three tracks offer variations of the present seen through the eyes of the future.

True to its title there are an infinite amount of ways to work through this release—each more interesting than the last.

Petals in the Stream video description:

“This is a visual representation of my rage, distilled through protest, about the murder of George Floyd. Joe Sousa's track provided the perfect backdrop to trek through the woods of my discontent. The spontaneous but deliberate nature of this song hung heavily as I reacted to the changes. Strange fruit continues to hang in the poplar trees, now compounded by digital hatred and amplified by technology. The woods in this video are entirely artificial, created by machine learning, and layered with live performances of touchdesigner visual effects after days of protesting police brutality. As AI is used to identify protestors for police retribution, we must use AI to create a better world through art and techno.”
